ANNUAL MEETING OF THE FPVA - CURITIBA / 2004

Curitiba, Brazil. 9/09/2004

With the presence of the members of the FPVA and observers of Europe, Oxygen of Colombia began in Curitiba the Annual Meeting of the Green Parties of America with a minute of silence remembering Ingrid Betancourt of the Green Party that was kidnapped by the CRAF two years and a half ago during its presidential campaign.

The opening was in charge of Jose Luis Penna, President of the Green Party of Brazil, that agreed with the Secretary General of the Green Party of Peru, Flor de María Hurtado, in the sense to place like a priority the protection of the Amazonian zone in the Brazilian, Peruvian and the Colombian territory, before the increased depredation of the tropical forest and the water of the region.

On the other hand Julia Willebrand, co-President of the FPVA, indicated that in the next elections of the United States, David Cobb, the presidential candidate of the Green Party represents the only pacifist option in front of the increasing militarism represented by the candidates Bush and Kerry.

Representing Mexico, Jorge Gonzalez Torres, co-President of the FPVA, presented his position that emphasized the important growth of the global Green force in spite of the enormous difficulties that they are facing. The federal deputy of the Ecological Green Party of Mexico, Leonardo Alvarez, displayed numbers and green concrete facts of the great growth of the Mexicans and the important legal advances that they have made by means of the legislative work in the Congress.

Manuel Baquedano, participated for the Ecological Party of Chile, with a detailed briefing of the many problems the Greens are confronting and of the spaces of opportunity for its growth. It mentioned the electoral challenges they face for the next municipal elections in the month of October.

Antonio Jorge Melo Viana, co-President of the FPVA, displayed the strategy on which they are working in view of the next elections of Brazil in the month of October, where the green themes are the environment, the peace, the education, the social welfare and the generation of wealth.

To speak of the Green Colombians, Marelby Agatton once again mentioned the theme of the kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt, emphasizing that the government of Uribe has refused to make effective contact with the guerrilla to obtain the humanitarian liberation of Ingrid and of 4,200 people more that are being kept captive by the CRAF.

The meeting was attended by the Greens of Europe as observers. Claudio Aguirre of the Green Party of Sweden, informed on the initiative to create a Network in Europe of the Green Latin Americans to fortify the unit and make specific solidarity and cooperation with the all the greens of Latin America. Also, Catherine Greeze was present, and as a member of the Committee of the Green Party of Europe, she expressed the necessity that all the Green Parties of the world speak with a single voice, in unit and harmony.
