THE GREEN PARTY WITHDREW THE BASE OF SUPPORT FROM GOVERNOR LULA.
19/5/2005 12:46:47

The bench of the Green Party withdrew the base of support from Governor Lula, according to the announcement made by Marcelo Ortiz (PV-SP), leader of the bench, and by the other six federal deputies of the party.

The bench of the Green Party distributed the following note explaining the decision: "NOTE FROM THE BENCH OF THE GREEN PARTY - after 28 months of working in collaboration with the government expecting the accomplishment of the government's commitment to partner-environmental issues, the Green Party's bench decides, as of today, to remove the base of support from President Lula.

From the import of used tires, through transgenic legalization and the San Francisco transposition project, politicizing the mistaken industrialization of the Swampland and culminating with deforestation of 26,130 km² of the Amazonian, Lula's government, rejecting Marina Silva's contribution, represents a recession in which Brazilian environment is politicized.

The death of 38 Guarani-caiuás children from malnutrition in Gold, which dramatically revealed the total absence of a government's policy on indigenous
issues, as well as the construction projects for another nuclear power station are additional factors that impelled us to take this position.

In this sad day when astronomical numbers of Amazonian deforestation are announced, the Green Party, as an independent witness, states its intention to support the efforts made for the recovery of the Brazilian Congress's image and the CPI of Mail and Telegraph Services which will guide all its parliamentary actions in times of crisis leading towards a disastrous environmental policy and therefore becomes identified with society's legitimate aspirations to find a way for a renewal path to demanded transparency in government practice.

The Green Party was born with a proposal for change and it will continue fighting strongly for that change, being willing to support or to reject projects, as it generally does in standard practice, not by strict adherence to the pro-government bench but based on its ecological conscience and on the partner-environmental program approved by Brazilian society.

Brasilia, May 19, 2005.
The) MARCELO ORTIZ, Leader; EDSON DUARTE, vice-leader; LEONARDO MATTOS, vice-leader; SARNEY FILHO; JOVINO CANDIDO; FERNANDO GABEIRA; VITTORIO MEDIOLI".

PV WORKS PUBLIC PROSECUTION SERVICE AGAINST PIOSSEGURANCA 17/5/2005 11:45:13
The Green Party's deputies will meet today (17) at 18:30 with the Procurator-General of the Republic, Claudio Fonteles, to give a presentation against the Biosseguranca Law, already sanctioned by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The seven deputies of the Green bench in the Chamber will record a presentation, together with a subsidy for public service from the demanding party, to question the justice of the constitutionality of the Law that liberated transgenics without requesting previous environmental impact studies.
